Surviving the Last Days (Chapter 11 Part 2)

Death of the witnesses

Read along with me in Revelation 11:3-10

Many thriller based tv shows have used the plot line of a witness being hunted by the villain who committed the crime and now wants to silence them before the crime is exposed. We, the audience, are familiar with this storyline and wait for the hero to either save or avenge the victim in the end ...but imagine this headline in your local newspaper, if you will. “Death of the Witnesses!” Now, I find it unlikely that mainstream media will call these two "witnesses" because they are sent to torment mankind and that is what the world will see them as, tormentors. They will even celebrate their death, possibly with parties and parades nut a flowers for Christ we read and know that their purpose is to warn the world of the coming judgement and the world will hate them for it.

“And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.””

Will the people know who they are?

Some believers will recognize these men and know that they are God’s witnesses, but these two will be seen as a problem by everyone else. No one really wants to be confronted by their sins or be told that the way they are living is wrong. In today's society the common thought is that we should all accept eachother's lifestyles without judgement, but what the Bible clearly calls sin must be acknowledge as sin whether we like it or not.

“These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.”

God has claimed these witnesses as His own and given them the power to remove those who would do them harm. They have a job to do and they will complete it as is their purpose. Unfortunately there will be those who will have the intent of destroying these men and they will be burned with fire for trying. Have you ever tried to cover something up because you didn't want others to see it and judge you? The world will want to remove the testimony of these witnesses in order to hide their sin and go on living as the choose without judgement.

How can I apply this example to my life today?

Think for a moment how humanity rejoices over their death and compare it to how the enemy rejoices over his victory when we give up our mission to share Jesus. We are in fact witnesses of the Word and the Truth that is Jesus Christ our Savior. Every time we turn our heads or our conversations away from sharing that witness, we give Satan the victory.

Though it is not the same as trying to cover up a sin, knowing what you should do and not doing it is also a sin. The Holy Spirit convicts us when we have chosen wrongly and we know that we shouldn't have "said those things" or "left out that fact in the story." If we are going to live and die for Christ, we need to be bold in sharing His word with others no matter how uncomfortable we feel or who might try to burn us. We may not have witnessed a violent crime but we are witnesses of what Christ has done in our lives and we need to share it with the world.

“When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations will see their dead bodies three-and-a-half days, and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.”

Satan may have his minor victories over us, little sparrows, but God has already won the war. Keep fighting for the lost souls and sharing the love of God with them. Pray for the faithful witnesses you know because they are battling the same enemy and they need all the armor they can get.
